“West Side Story” takes place in New York where two rival gangs – the Jets White and the Portorican Sharks – are fighting for supremacy. Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Hispanic Maria (Rachel Zegler) fall in love, dream to run together and get married.
Spielberg is adapting the Broadway musical, which was inspired by William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, adapted from the book by Arthur Laurents to Leonard Bernstein’s music.
Walt Disney Studios will release the film in December 2020.
Dramaturgist Tony Kushner, nominated for Oscar and Pulitzer, wrote the screenplay. Justin Peck, awarded Tony, signs choreography, and the musical team is conductor Gustavo Dudamel of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
