Pre-production will begin at the end of this month. The script was completed a few weeks ago by Greg Russo, who said about the reboot story: “I can not give too many details, but I assure you that the seven original characters have been treated with utmost importance. I think it should be considered in any franchise adaptation. ”
Russo’s characters are Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero, Scorpio, Kano, Raiden – with the series of video games launched in 1992 by Midway Games.
For the role of Kano, actor Joel Edgerton (The Gift, Black Mass) is now in talks with producers.
Mortal Kombat was first adapted in 1995, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (his second film after Shopping). Chronicles were mixed, but the movie hit box office success – at a production budget of $ 18 million, it had $122 million in revenue worldwide.
It was followed by Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (released in 1997, was not as attractive to the public anymore) and could have been continued by Mortal Kombat: Rebirth if Kevin Tancharoen had not abandoned the project. It was taken over in 2015 by James Wan as a manufacturer. Simon McQuoid will stand at the helm of the new Mortal Kombat movie.
“I am so excited and excited to come back to Australia with Mortal Kombat, especially after having had a great experience here with Aquaman. Now we can explore the southern continent with its fantastic places and work with the talented people here, “Wan said.
