Halle Bailey will be Ariel in Disney’s live-action movie “The Little Mermaid,” and this will be the first major feature in a feature film for the 19-year-old singer known as part of the R & B Chloe x Halle duo.
Director Rob Marshall spent the last few months looking for the best option for this role, but, according to Variety, Bailey was preferential.
“After an extensive search, it was clear that Halle is that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance – plus a great voice – all the natural qualities needed to interpret this emblematic role,” Marshall said in a statement.
The cast includes Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina, and Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula Witch.
“The Little Mermaid” will include pieces from the animated film released in 1989 and new compositions by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”). The latter will also be a producer alongside Marshall, Marc Platt, and John DeLuca.
The script was written by David Magee and Jane Goldman.
The “Little Mermaid” animation in 1989 is centered on Ariel, the siren princess, who falls in love with a man. Menken wrote the music, including “Under the Sea”, “Part of Your World” and “Kiss the Girl”.
Chloe x Halle made up of Bailey sisters, debuted in 2015. The duo became famous for the Beyoncé covers on YouTube. After signing with Parkwood Entertainment, the singers opened Beyoncé concerts in the Lemonade tournament.
