Actor Leonardo DiCaprio is co-chair of a new organization to combat climate change and biodiversity loss and defend the rights of indigenous people. Earth Alliance was launched on Tuesday. DiCaprio set up the organization with Laurene Powell Jobs, often engaged in the charity business, and with the investor and philanthropist Brian Sheth.
The organization brings together Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (actor-funded), Emerson Collective (Powell Jobs) and Global Wildlife Conservation (Sheth).
It will be led by an independent team of scientists and conservationists, according to a press release. The purpose of the Earth Alliance is to protect ecosystems, support renewable energy and ensure indigenous rights.
“I am very proud of the impact my foundation has had over the last 20 years, during which it has supported about 200 projects by 132 climatology, marine, and conservation organizations,” DiCaprio said. “Today we made the next step in the evolution of the LDF. Laurene and Brian are incredible civic leaders who share my passion and understand the urgency and level of the challenges we face. ”
DiCaprio also said that the new platform team will identify the best programs that will bring real change to the world.
Earth Alliance will provide grants and other educational opportunities, involve local communities and work with organizations and individuals in areas most affected by biodiversity loss and climate change. In addition, the platform will fund campaigns, documentaries and public debates.
“Everything we know and love is threatened by the climate crisis and everyone has to ask and ask the other what we can do more to protect the planet we share,” said Powell Jobs.
Sheth said, “Our planet is at a critical crossroads and we have the opportunity to turn our society into a sustainable one in harmony with and in support of life on Earth.”
Since its inception in 1998, Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has provided grants of over $ 100 million for projects that have targeted the oceans and regions of the seven continents.
