‘Til Death do us apart or Netflix decides to cancel. What he did! Last night, the streaming platform representatives made the official announcement of canceling the Santa Clarita Diet drama after three seasons. It is already a trend by Netflix that the original projects be canceled after three seasons even if it ends with a cliffhanger, as we can say that was also the case with our real estate agents in Santa Clarita.
In spite of the online campaign #SaveSantaClaritaDiet and the 100% perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as the fact that season 3 appeared in various bass tips and recommendations, Netflix did not want to continue with this project, preferring to let the audience interpret the fate of one of the main characters.
Leaving aside Marco’s co-production projects, it seems that the projects canceled after three seasons come as a result of the concluded contracts and the fact that they become too expensive – namely, the Netflix agreements are on the cost-plus model, still offering at the beginning of the production plus 30% + extra costs, but also increases after each season; if after season 1 these increases are somewhat modest, after season 3 they are climbing up and the original projects can cross the threshold from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars.
Season 3 was left on March 29. Santa Clarita Diet joins other recently canceled Netflix original projects – One Day at a Time, Travelers, Love, Bloodline.
Netflix Representatives:
“The world had never known a ‘zom-com’ until Santa Clarita Diet, and we’re indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix. To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead. We’re grateful to Victor, Drew, and Timothy, along with fellow executive producers Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, Chris Miller and Ember Truesdell and the terrific cast, including Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo, and crew for three hilarious seasons for Netflix members to discover for years to come.”
Timothy Olyphant said:
“I loved working on this show. I’m going to continue coming in and doing scenes. If they don’t want to film it, that’s up to them.”
Drew Barrymore said:
“Of all of the characters I’ve ever been, Sheila Hammond is one of my favorites. She and Joel were an amazing couple, who had shared goals. And i am lucky to have worked along side Tim Olyphant. It was an honor to get to do something so delightful. Sheila lives forever in me. And I am grateful to Victor Fresco, who created a world so unique.”
